Getting a pool is supposed to feel like finally making it, but when a cousin arrives and throws her toddler into the mix like you owe her free daycare and a weekend off. If other relatives text you about it, tell them to stay in their lane because this isn't their concern (unless they have a pool in which case you can suggest they invite her over). And if she brings it up again, tell her that since other relatives let kids play in their pools, then she can go visit one of them instead. Problem solved!

  • Skip the guilt. Pools stay nice when the rules hold and nobody ends the day fishing action figures from the filter. Toddlers do not have union contracts. They will survive a grownup afternoon and the only thing anyone deserves is to chill without lifeguard duty sneaking up when least expected. If that makes the generosity police unhappy there is always next weekend for them to find another pool to invade.
